Our major ongoing Programs:
The Green Sanctuary Program

The Green Sanctuary Program is a nation-wide UU program that encourages UU congregations to put into practice its Seventh Principle as promoted by the Unitarian Universalist Ministry For The Earth (UUMFE).

The GSP requires that, to be designated as a "Green Sanctuary Congregation" by the UUMFE, each participating congregation must complete 12 tasks in four focus areas. The focus areas are
  • 1) Worship and Celebration,
  • 2) Religious Education,
  • 3) Environmental Justice and
  • 4) Sustainable Living.
The current BUF GSP Committee worked diligently for several years to come up with 12 projects that would provide all members of the congregation a way to participate.

Our Congregation has now developed and has implemented an extensive GSP Program, including a notable entire subsection of this website, at buf.org/gsp/gindex.html -- even with appropriate music!

And, in the spring of 2009, our application was approved, so we now ARE a UUMFE certified "Green Sanctuary Congregation"!

BUF Social Justice Committee

BUF has a very active Social Justice Committee, which acts to inform the Congregation and the community of injustices, and of activities. With good information, our members are better able to understand civic and justice issues, and act individually to bring about change.

We often hold and co-sponsor forums and expert speaker programs - sometimes in the church building, and sometimes at other venues, depending on the size of the event, or the needs of a co-sponsor. See more at the Social Justice section,

BUF Social Justice Collections

Twelve times a year, one Sunday a month, BUF members will be invited to give to a Social Justice Collection for a non-profit organization serving in one of the following areas: women and children, environment, poverty/homelessness, peace and human rights, social and economic justice, and health.

We will give Social Justice Collection preference to organizations that have 501(c)3 status; we will require that all recipients are registered with the state. We will consider awarding Social Justice Collections to organizations without 501(c)3 status if adequate justification is provided.

The UU Seventh Principle:
"Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."
